The only reason is because I have bought a new (last of the old type) Macbook Pro 15 in monster spec, yes £2888!.I have been working in IT for nearly 20 years and nothing beats the quality of Macs build and OS to me. The only reason I still use Windows is because of one program I use in MS Office for my work. Mac is just so much more stable, better updates control and because they QC the OS and the hardware, it just works. You can still work on a Macbook for heavy daily use 5 years after purchase, and I would say for basic use, 10 years after it was made and this is increasing. Try that on any Windows laptop. As it is going, with more and more businesses and people using the cloud and online services, the Macbook Air is perfect for most. Use Timemachine to backup/restore with zero hassle. Even my mum could nearly do it. Last time I had a Windows 7 virus, it stopped me working for 2 business days. So I travel and work a lot and when I am away for 6 months, I want the power of my Windows desktop for certain jobs that this machine is slower at. Don't be thinking this isn't a great machine and able to do most tasks, but using VMware and a Windows installation (which uses single core then instead of dual and half the system memory), ask for massive spreadsheet editing (250mb files for example) then it will take longer depending on the quantity of formulas. You want to browse, email, blog, edit video, do some graphics, write a book etc etc etc it will do it all. In fact I actually used this last year whilst abroad for 5 months and it still did all I asked. However instead of maintaining two machines in the office (Windows and Mac) I want to have it all in one machine to make cloud file sync, maintenance, backups, portability etc in one place. Unfortunately I won't have the new one on my lap like this one. Disk speeds on this fantastic, I meant to take a screenshot before wiping, but I forgot. The reading from Blackmagic was around the 750mbs read and write. The same test on my Windows PC with SSD on sata 3 is only around 150mbs for read, and less for write.The battery life is also very good, around 8-10hrs with basic usage. It is upgraded to the max spec, 8gb, 512gb, i7. You couldn't get higher and apart from a newer processor, you can't. If you wanted, you can actually buy 1-2TB PCIe hard drive cards should you ever feel the need to increase capacity in the future. I really thought long and hard before buying this as it was a choice between this and the equivalent 13 inch Macbook Pro. Prices were similar as were the speeds. I didn't and don't need retina and repairs if they were required were more expensive/difficult on the Pro's. Give that some thought if you plan on buying used machines as the retinas are difficult to repair, these less expensive even though they are thinner. Bad point and believe me when I say I have no idea how or when but the corner of the lid is creased. I had planned on replacing the lid but never got around to it. However a spare used but as new condition lid is included in the sale if you have the time to swap them over, so you will have a 'as nearly new' machine. Please don't think because I have used this abroad, this has travelled and has the scratches that can occur when people don't take care. I have two houses and they are transported between the two. There is also a few tiny weird spots on the bottom of the case, like sand rash or something. Again no idea how they got there, but it reminds me of when I got my first iPhone 5 which by the end of the first day had the same marks all over it even though it was in a case from the store. I took the case off for pictures as you can see and to be honest I'd forgotten how slim these machines are. With the orange case on, it actually feels bulky in comparison. If you can take care, it is a lovely weight and size left as it was born, in its birthday suit. It comes with; 1. A used orange plastic case just mentioned.2. The soft case which currently has the spare lid should you wish to swap it.3. The original box and magsafe charger (plus extension cable).4. Palm skin (silver) which has been fitted from new and no scratches underneath. It doesn't have the trackpad sticker as that reduced sensitivity. It can remove if required.
